THE WOUND IS THE PLACE WHERE THE LIGHT ENTERS YOU.” -RUMI

SARA BROOKS, RP

Hi, I’m Sara!

Reaching out for support is an incredibly courageous form of self-care. I’m so glad that you’ve made this first step.

I believe that each of us is inherently motivated to grow and find personal meaning. Tuning into our capacity for growth can be difficult, particularly as we move through an increasingly confusing and difficult world. As a therapist, I believe it is my privilege to support adults, adolescents, and couples as they work to navigate life’s challenges and seek to discover their authentic selves.

I also believe that each of us has a story, and that our stories shape and define our individual identities. Stories are personal and powerful, and they can be explored to gain a deeper understanding of how beliefs and values influence our present experience.  My own story includes a career in music performance and education, and it was a wonderful and intense process that led me to work in the field of mental wellness. My story also includes my experience as a mother and a transition to parenthood that was both joyous and challenging. Just as I have been shaped by my story, so too have you, and I would be honoured to support you as you continue your journey.

In my career as a classical musician I was active as a pianist, singer, and choral conductor. I hold degrees in music from Acadia University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Alberta. I also have completed a masters of counselling psychology from the University of Lethbridge and am now a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, and a Canadian Certified Counsellor from the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association.

I hold training in cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical-behaviour therapy (DBT) and Gottman couples therapy. I also draw inspiration from emotional-focused therapy (EFT), narrative therapy, and an attachment therapeutic framework. I am also committed to person-centred and trauma-informed practice. My life experiences have led me to specialize in musician mental wellness as well as prenatal and postpartum mental health.

When not working with clients I can be found spending time with family. I also enjoy reading, knitting, and curling up with a good movie!
